Rohit will be given time as Test opener: Kohli

Published

Visakhapatnam, 1 Oct : India captain Virat Kohli said on Tuesday that Rohit Sharma will be given time to grow into his new role as Test opener. Rohit has been a succesfull opener in limited-overs cricket, but this will be the first time he does so in Tests, a format in which he has not had as much success.

“We are in no rush as far as Rohit opening the innings is concerned,” Kohli said on the eve of the start of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. “He will be given space to find his own game and come into his own.”

Kohli said that while the team hopes Rohit can eventually play his natural attacking game at the top of the order, there is no expectation of him having to follow a certain template.

“In Test cricket it’s about finding your game in different pitches. We are not looking at a certain kind of display from Rohit. Yes, his strength is to take the game forward. Someone like Viru bhai (Virender Sehwag) used to do it for the team for a long period. It’s not like someone would have told him you need to get a hundred before lunch. It was basically his natural instinct and once he felt comfortable in his game he could demolish attacks and really put the team in poll position.

Visakhapatnam, 02 Oct : The class has been stamped in the maiden appearance itself and it will now be all about building from here on as Rohit Sharma drove, cut and flicked his way to his maiden hundred as an opener in the second session of the first Test between India and South Africa at the ACA-VDCA Stadium on Wednesday.

Starting the session at 91/0, the Indian openers put on 111 runs in the post-lunch session when umpires called for an early break owing to bad light. While Rohit was batting on 115, Mayank Agarwal was unbeaten on 84 as the South Africa bowlers had no answer to the quality batting on display.

The second session was once again dominated by the Indians, but primarily by India’s new opener — Rohit. Rising to the challenge handed to him by the team management, Rohit stole the show as his cautious approach was overtaken by the free flowing batsmen one is used to seeing in the limited-overs format in the second session.

Brief Scores: India: 202/0 (Rohit 115, Mayank 84) vs South Africa

Speaking to, sources in the know of developments said that Kapil has resigned from the position. “Yes, he has sent his resignation from the position of CAC chief.”

“There should have ideally been an official announcement from the Committee of Administrators (CoA) that the committee is disbanded since Vinod Rai has been vocal about the fact that it was an appointment done only for the selection of the head coach of the Indian team. “Maybe in that case, the embarrassment that the legends are facing the conflict notice could have been avoided,” the source added.

The former Indian captain’s decision to resign from the CAC comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ethics Officer D.K. Jain sent a notice to the panel comprising of Kapil, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy with regards to allegations of conflict of interest as claimed by MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta.
